On-Page SEO: A Clear, Useful Checklist

Improve page titles, headings, content structure, links and image context with people-first on-page practices.

Start with the page's purpose

Before editing tags, name the audience, the task and the main subject. Check that the page provides distinct value, answers the expected questions and is not competing with a more appropriate page on your own site.

A useful page title describes the content accurately and helps people choose whether to visit. A meta description can summarize the page, but search engines may generate a different snippet.

Organize content for readers

Use one clear main heading and supporting headings that describe the sections beneath them. Headings should create a logical outline, not serve as a place to repeat keywords. Put essential context near the answer and explain unfamiliar terms.

Use lists, tables and images when they make the material easier to follow. Add descriptive alternative text when an image conveys information; leave decorative images appropriately empty.

Connect the page to the site

Add internal links where they help a reader continue, using link text that makes the destination understandable. Check that links work and the destination adds relevant detail. Avoid generic repeated anchors or links added solely to manipulate signals.

Review canonical URLs, indexability and structured data as part of a wider technical check. Ensure any markup reflects information visible on the page.

Use the checklist and review

Check the page on mobile, confirm accessible color contrast and keyboard navigation, and look for stale or unsupported claims. A SERP preview can help review metadata, but it is only an approximation—not a prediction of how a search engine will display the page.

Revisit the page when its facts, links, audience needs or purpose change.
